17 Hurt in Air Turbulence

SEVENTEEN of 256 passengers and crew aboard a Philippine Airlines flight from Singapore to Manila suffered minor injuries on Saturday when the airliner encountered severe turbulence, airport authorities said.

About an hour into the 3-1/2-hour flight, the Airbus 330 dropped suddenly from an altitude of 11,300 to 11,000 meters in an air pocket. It touched down safely in Manila at around 1:30 p.m.

“The airplane shook,” said Alfred Ugot, 29, who was feeding his son with his seatbelt unbuckled when the plane hit the turbulence. He suffered some swelling in the head after bumping and breaking an overhead reading lamp.

Airport physician Elena Querijero said most of those injured suffered superficial cuts, abrasions and contusions. — Reuters
