MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang renewed yesterday its appeal to the Philippine Airlines Employees Association (PALEA) to course their complaints through the legal processes rather than go on a strike.
Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. said PALEA appealed the decision of the Department of Labor and Employment to the Office of the President upholding the retrenchment of PAL workers as the airline would already outsource some of its services.
Ochoa said over Radio Mindanao Network that his office required that all documents be submitted so they could assess and “take the appropriate action.”
Ochoa said there were other ways to resolve the issue than to go on strike. “The jurisdiction to resolve (the case) is still with us,” Ochoa said.
He advised PALEA to follow the rules and not complicate matters by going on a strike without first exhausting all avenues.
Members of PALEA, the ground crew union of PAL, went ahead and cast their votes on Tuesday to decide whether to proceed with a strike or not that threatens to paralyze operations.
PALEA said yesterday that a majority of its members voted to go on strike to protest the airline’s alleged union busting and individual bargaining negotiations with its members.
PALEA president Gerry Rivera said that based on initial reports, more than 70 percent of their members voted “yes” for a strike.
Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz had warned PALEA that a formal appeal was the proper legal move, not a strike vote.
