Airline’s ground crew on strike vote

Manila Standard Today
December 7, 2010

THE union of flag carrier Philippine Airlines’ ground employees said Monday they will vote to strike today, Tuesday, because the management has been harassing its members to accept its separation offer.

“If the management does not desist from harassing [the Philippine Airlines Employees’ Association] Pmembers to avail of the separation offer, which is tantamount to individual bargaining and therefore illegal, then we will be forced to actually hold the strike,” group head Gerardo Rivera said in a statement.

Airline spokeswoman Cielo Villaluna said the management was “questioning the legality and propriety of the signing of strike vote notices because the condition does not warrant the filing of a strike vote notice.”

The union said it had already delivered a notice-of-strike vote to the office of National Conciliation and Mediation Board executive director Reynaldo Ubaldo, and a copy had been furnished the Office of Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz early Monday morning.

The union said it will proceed with the strike vote at 9 am to 12 midnight today.
“A majority support of the members assessed via a strike vote is necessary to hold a legal strike,” Rivera said.

“We don’t make strike threats, we just do it when needed.” Jeremiah F. de Guzman
