MANILA, Philippines—Philippine Airlines (PAL) and its ground crew labor union Thursday agreed to defer conciliation talks at the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) after the union took the labor dispute to Malacañang, an airline spokesperson said Thursday.
Cielo Villaluna, PAL spokesperson, said management, the Philippine Airlines Employees Association (PALEA), and the National Conciliation and Mediation Board decided to defer the talks since the Palace was already reviewing Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz’s decision allowing PAL to outsource 2,600 jobs.
“Both parties as well as the NCMB decided to defer until further notice the conciliation hearings in deference to the fact that PALEA filed last Friday its petition for a presidential review in Malacañang,” Villaluna said after the hearing at the NCMB in Intramuros, Manila.
“We would like to believe that this is a form of status quo. We are going to await the decision of the Palace,” she added.
Villaluna said PAL respected the authority of Malacañang to intervene in the labor case and review decisions of Cabinet members.
