MANILA, Philippines—The five-hour compulsory mediation talks between the management and cabin crew union of the Philippine Airlines ended at 8 p.m. Wednesday with an agreement covering only the workers' demand for a higher rice allowance.

Robert Anduiza, Flight Attendants and Stewards Association of the Philippines president, told reporters that the management agreed to increase the 1,600 union members' rice allowance from P1,200 to P1,800.

Anduiza said, however, that the union agreed to company's proposal only "in principle."
"Our agreement on the rice allowance is contingent on the other agreements that we might reach with management regarding our other major issues, such as retirement age, gender discrimination and wage hike," Anduiza said.

He said he hopes the management would "move" on the other pending issues with only 16 days to go before the end of the 30-day cooling off period that followed the union's filing of a notice of strike due to disagreements with management in negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement.
The mediation talks, brokered by the labor department's National Conciliation and Mediation Board, resumes 2 p.m. on Tuesday next week.
