Government contingency plans for looming PAL cabin crew strike not enough - official

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Foreign carriers may not be able to accommodate all the passengers of Philippine Airlines should the flight attendants pursue their plan to go on strike which will cripple the airline's operations, a government official said today.

While emergency measures are currently being set up by the Philippine government, most airlines have their own flights to worry about, and few have any spare aircraft to serve routes on a short-term basis, Civil Aeronautics Board Executive Director Carmelo Arcilla said today.

"As a matter of policy, most airlines have all of their assets deployed. There will be unavoidable gaps," he said.

"We've been talking to other airlines already but it's difficult to imagine that there will be a smooth transition," Arcilla said.

Philippine Airlines, the country's flag carrier, carried close to 9 million passengers, making it the country's largest carrier.

The cabin crew last week filed a notice of strike with the labor department following the management refusal to budge from its policy of retiring employees as young as 40-years-old.
