Gov't hopes for peaceful resolution of PAL labor dispute

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) -- The government is hopeful that peaceful resolution could be arrived at between the flag carrier Philippine Airlines management and its flight attendants and stewards union, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said today.

Lacierda said in a news briefing that the government is monitoring the situation but at the moment, it will not step in on the problem involving the PAL management and the Flight Attendants and Stewards Association of the Philippines (FASAP).

"As far as the government is concerned, we are concerned about the problem of the employees' association and the mechanics. But right now we will just going to monitor the dialogue," he said.
"We are hoping that there will be resolution," he added.

FASAP threatened to file a notice of strike before the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) despite the 80 million pesos (1.78 million U.S. dollars) package that the PAL management offered to its employees to settle and close the collective bargaining agreement for the period of 2005-2010.

The union, however, said that the amount was not enough and does not address the minimum wage violation of PAL.

Lacierda said the government will wait for the formal filing of the notice to strike by FASAP before the DOLE.

"If they (FASAP) will file the notice of strike, then the government will look at it. Under the Labor Code, the government can intervene. It will depend on the Secretary of DOLE whether to assume jurisdiction or not," he said.\

But he added that the government has several options that it could take if it is already the national interest that will be at stake.
